Well this week we had a very nice baptismal service with flor (mom of a member here in Oranjestad) and her granddaughter Eliza. Eliza had a lot of friends come from her school along with their parents to see the service and so many people came we had to move into the chapel. I counted close to 80 people at the baptism. I've never seen so many people come to a baptism dressed in white either. I guess I missed out on that deal. Flor was baptized be her son in law who is the 1st counselor in the branch presidency. He also baptized his daughter Eliza. They have been waiting for several years for this day to come. Flor is an awesome lady. We'd been a little nervous about her getting permission to be baptized from her husband who is in Peru. She told me he wasn't much of a believer but we kept telling them they needed to make sure he was ok with the baptism. They kept procrastinating it until the day of the baptism when finally Flor called and she told him, "I'm getting baptized today weather you like it or not. What do you think?" Apparently he gave her the ok because she was pretty content when she told us about it.
After the service we went out to do some visits while we still had time. When we were pulling out of the church I hit the curb and blew the tire on the car. Miraculously there was a full size spare in the back and we got it changed in a hurry. Yep, that was one of those moments that you just want to forget about.
On Friday morning we went up to San Nicolas to meet up with the other missionaries and go paint a house. (25 minute drive) The San Nicolas branch president Buckley was there as well and we got a lot of work done. The member we were helping is from Surinam so we got some good Surinam food (Rice, and a lot of pork).
All kinds of political parades etc. going on in Aruba right now. Elections are here in about a week. A member told us that last time they had a elections the incumbent party AVP had a parade of cars that stretched across the whole island. He said it started at 7 a.m and he got home at 9 p.m. It should be pretty exciting.
It has been cool to be with E. Thornock again. We reminisce the old MTC days etc. Its hard to believe that it all has gone bye in a blur. We are excited for what is happening here in Aruba. There is enough work here in Oranjestad for at least 6 missionaries and we are trying to use our time the best we can. It takes a lot of inspiration to work most efficiently in areas like this. We are meeting a lot of cool people through contacts and we are finding more and more inactives each week.
Its great to hear that the rain is falling and flooding. It rained a couple of days here last week and the grass has started to look a lot better.
Have a great week. Love you guys!!
Love Elder Herring
