First week in the DOMINICAN REPUBLIC! OH YA!‏

So this is my first week in the field and oh my goodness is it different from the MTC! we actually get to get out and talk to real people and walk around!! That is something that i had to get used to was walking but im loving it. ha its funny cause i hate the cold but now that im here, im starting to appreciate the cold a little bit more! the only thing that scares me is that its supposedly "winter" here and im still soaked in sweat! haha well i love it anyway! my companions name is Elder Jensen! he is legit! super cool guy and he's from PG, Utah! He's been here for 8 months now and already he is pretty fluent! crazy! So our house is apparently really big and nice for missionaries so im appreciative for that one! I now appreciate all the food that anyone from back home has ever cooked for me cause our fridge is literally EMPTY! haha we just eat at these little stores that are on the corners called colmadas! Oh another crazy thing about this place is their money! Everyone here uses pesos instead of dollars so im still trying to get used to it! they don't have a such thing as change so im loving that one! its only 1, 5, 10, 20, 25, 50, 100, 200, 500 etc... its pretty simple and things here are pretty cheap. 38 pesos equals 1 american dollar. so a normal day here is wake up at 6:30 (which im still struggling with), then personal study until 9 and then companion study until 11 and then we go out and start going to our investigators houses. Then we are pretty much out walking all day until like 9 or 9:30 at night and then come home and shower and then crash! everyday here goes by so fast! its crazy but im loving it! haha anyone back home would freak out if they came here! they have no rules for driving and so the highway is super super scary and they don't have emissions or inspections so people literally drive cars that billow out black smoke! and oh my goodness there are these really loud motorcycles EVERYWHERE!! i'm sending a bunch of pictures with this email so hopefully you can all see everything! the showers here are cold but i appreciate them cause its so hot! people here speak really really fast spanish and its all slang so its tough to catch on to! I feel like there is so much stuff that i want to say but all of it is so disorganized in my head! I honestly don't think ive ever done so much walking in my life! haha im going to come home weighing 100 pounds! the plane ride here was long but ever since we've been here things have just been go go go! everyday that i lay down in my bed, i just think how amazing it is that i am actually living in another country and how fast time is going.
so when i first got here we were greeted at the airport by 10 or so missionaries which was really cool to actually see someone that knew us instead of being starred at in the airports by a bunch of people wondering why a bunch of 19 year olds were all dressed up. we got here at about 10:30 and then had to drive for like a half hour or so and then stayed at a hotel the first night. haha hotels here are different! a lot different! if you were to search up DR hotels on the internet it would just show you resorts and stuff but the real hotels in the city are... well different. then the next day we woke up and went to the mission home and we were introduced to the mission president and his wife and then we had a little meeting and then left with our new companions to our houses! we take things called "gua guas" which are this tiny buses that are packed full of people! yep that was an interesting experience carrying suitcases on one of those! Right now my mission is in Boca Chica, Dominican Republic. Its a nice area and the ward members here are really faithful and really nice! I am blessed to be able to be where i am right now! and i am also blessed to be able to have the companion that i have! in this i included pictures of our house and where we sleep. we have to sleep with a mosquito net over us every night or else you wake up looking like a marshmallow! also theres a picture of my desk, the inside of our fridge, the back porch where we hang our clothes and a picture of the washer and dryer. they have one machine for the washer and dryer. on the left side, you wash your clothes and then on the right side, you put your clothes in this thing that spins really fast for 5 minutes and then you hang your clothes on the line to dry! then our backyard is the picture with just the tree and its full of garbage. but everywhere here has garbage all over so thats normal! then my companion/ trainer Elder Gibbs. he's a really cool guy! then i took a couple pictures of what they call a "colmada" its pretty much just like a little mini mart thing that you can go buy food out of! then there are a couple pictures of our church which is really really nice! and then last of all is a picture of those motorcycles that are everywhere around here!! well anyways i hope everyone is doing really well back at home and i love you all! thank you for all the help that you all have been to me!

Love,
Elder Taylor Herring
